Atago is a "Fleet of Fog" heavy cruiser from the Second Oriental Fleet. She is sent by Nagato to record the battle of the hunting pursue fleet led by battleships Kongou and Hiei against I-401.
Heavy cruiser Atago
Atago is a "Fleet of Fog" reincarnation of WWII Takao-class heavy cruiser Atago. She has two sisters that have made their appearance within the series: Takao and Maya.
Since Atago has not made any appearance in anime, nor there are any color pages with her ship-body in manga, it is impossible to tell what the color scheme of her ship-body was. However, the final illustration panel from the anime hints that her mental model has light blue hair like Takao, only shorter.
It appears that Atago has her armament similar to the armament of other Takao-class heavy cruisers: ten main Photon cannons on five turrets, a number of smaller Photon cannons, a number of missile launchers, 12 torpedo tubes, and a Super-Graviton Cannon. Apparently, she has the same amount of Corrosive Warheads as Takao (128).
She's also supposed to have a moderately-powerful Wave-Force armor, but since Atago is yet to be hit in any battles, it's impossible to verify this.
Mental model
Heavy cruiser Atago has one Mental Model. She appears as a girl in her middle teens. She has very unusual light-purple eyes and rather long blue hair with red bows in on the both sides of her head. She wears a sleeveless frilly white blouse, dark miniskirt and black socks. Aside from Kongou, she appears to be the only Mental Model in the party that isn't wearing school uniform similar to Hiei's.
Atago appears to be rather unmotivated yet slightly rebellious girl. Since she had barely said anything on those few manga pages where she has starred so far, it's impossible to say, what hobbies or interests she has.

- Ashigara - A heavy cruiser from Kongou's fleet that was sunk by I-401. She was the one who managed to to convince Atago to step in. According to Atago, Ashigara owes her one for this.
