Atago is a "Fleet of Fog" Takao-class heavy cruiser from the Second Oriental Fleet. She is sent by Nagato to record the battle of the hunting pursue fleet led by battleships Kongou and Hiei against I-401.
Heavy cruiser Atago[]
Atago is a "Fleet of Fog" reincarnation of WWII Takao-class heavy cruiser Atago. All three of her sisters, Takao, Maya and Choukai, have made their appearance within the series.
Based on semi-official art, Atago's hull is mainly light-blue in color. No other details are currently known.
Atago has her armament similar to the armament of other Takao-class heavy cruisers: ten main Photon cannons on five turrets, a number of smaller Photon cannons, missile launchers, 12 torpedo tubes, and a Super-Graviton Cannon. She also has a moderately-powerful Wave-Force armor, but has not been tested in the manga.
Mental model[]
Atago has one Mental Model, which closely resembles her sister ship Takao. She appears as a girl in her middle teens with light-purple eyes. She also has long blue hair with red bows on both sides of her head. Atago wears a sleeveless frilly white blouse, dark miniskirt and black socks.
Atago is unwilling to involve herself in affairs that does not concern her. She respects the orders given to her, but will act on her own when given the proper motivation. Her preferred method of attack is typical of the Fleet of Fog: by unleashing a massive attack at once.
Role[]
Atago was sent by her flagship Nagato to observe the actions of the hunting squad led by battleships Kongou and Hiei and record their battle against I-401. She didn't participate in the battles herself - even allowing I-401 to safely pass right underneath her - until sinking Ashigara had begged for her to protect Kongou, who was still undergoing calibrations at the time. After seeing Ashigara's face as her ship sank close by, Atago agreed to assist the fleet by launching her complement of 128 corrosive torpedoes. I-401 managed to avoid all but a single torpedo, cutting her engines, and disappearing from Atago's sensors.
The crew attributed Kongou's survival to Atago's intervention. Shizuka admitted to believing that it was Takao who attacked them before Iona identified Atago. Nagato, who was observing the battle through Atago, mused on whether Atago should be punished for acting without orders. Later, Atago is recalled, since her flagship has apparently gathered all of the information she needed.
A bit later, Atago's Mental Model is seen in Yokosuka, where she plays the role of 'Nodoka's' younger sister and is being enrolled into the Japanese National Maritime Institute of Technology.
Relationships[]
- Nagato - Atago's flagship. Nagato mentions liking Atago, but she did not elaborate why.
- Takao - Atago is hinted to have a sister complex for Takao, blaming I-401 for stealing her away.
- Yamato - In addition to being the highest (available) authority in the "Fleet of Fog", Yamato also plays the role of Atago's older sister as they infiltrate Yokosuka city.
