Volume 09 of the "Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio" manga covers the second part of the battle between Kongou's hunting fleet and the "Blue Steel", co-lead by Chihaya Gunzou and Iona.
This volume will be officially released in English on January 10, 2017.
Gunzou and Hyuuga disappear from inboard of I-401 and Iona assumes the role of the captain. For the first time in the last two years. Though, at the moment she isn't doing much beside lying on the bottom of the sea in hiding and observing the situation playing above.
Meanwhile, Hiei with the help of Myoukou are organizing their fleet and prepare them for the confrontation with I-401. Heavy cruisers Ashigara and Nachi are the ones that do the actual search - though the former suggest using carpet bombing until they annihilate I-401. The idea is shot down by Myoukou since this would leave them without a way to determine that I-401 is indeed done for.
Repulse, who had successfully escaped from her pursuers, is seen performing some repairs, while also hold a conversation of sorts with Vampire. The latter suggests she should contact the humans who had saved her.
Finally, we see Yamato having a flashback. There, we see the result of her fight with Musashi, who, apparently, saves Chihaya Shouzou. We also see I-401 gaining her Mental Model. Once back to real time, Yamato orders one of her destroyers, Yukikaze, to form a Mental Model (with her support) and go look for Gunzou, who is currently not inboard of I-401.
Gunzou and Hyuuga are traveling to Bounomisaki (where Hyuuga's hull lies) via Matsushima shuttle submarine. From their dialogue we learn a little bit more about Gunzou's motivations and his actions before the I-401's crew was assembled. It is also mentioned that Hyuuga had established her Mental Model because of his ...order. Hyuuga herself then reveals that quite a few Mental Models are philosophizing about their reasons for existence and also mentions that the "Fleet of Fog" was supposed to activate on May 1, 1945, but couldn't because of the Admiralty Code's disappearance.
Meanwhile, in New Hakodate, Haruna, Kirishima and Osakabe Makoto discuss another event that had happened on May 1: the Facility #4 fire (2054). Supposedly, the "Fleet of Fog" has some connection to that event - among other things, Amaha Kotono, who looks like supreme flagship Yamato, 'died' in that fire - and Makoto asks Haruna and Kirishima is they'd be willing to go back to Yokosuka and investigate the fire.
Recently promoted to the position of the minister of Military Affairs Kamikage Ryuujirou pays the prime Minister Kaede a visit. They discuss Hakugei III engaging the "Fleet of Fog", heavy cruiser Maya leaving the port of New Hakodate (with Osakabe Makie inboard) and a new transfer student for the Japanese National Maritime Institute of Technology who is Takao's Mental Model in disguise. They also discuss the sightings of someone who looks like I-401's Mental Model in the city of Yokosuka.
Back in the open sea, Ashigara and Nachi manage to locate I-401 (and as a funny not-really-background event, we get to see Shizuka in just a towel). Upon finding I-401, Ashigara immediately attacks, without any real plan======Chapter 51Edit
I-401 escapes from Ashigara into underwater canyon and ultimately escapes, despite Nachi doing her best to assist her sister. Ashigara's Mental Model also takes a direct hit from an Acoustic torpedo in the process, not that it did much to her...
Afterwards, the story's focus shifts to Yokosuka. There, we're shown I-402 interacting with locals, while Takao is being busy playing a student at the Japanese National Maritime Institute of Technology. Apparently, her job there is to prevent Haruna and co from learning the truth about the Faculty #4 Fire.
I-402 makes her way back to her 'base of operation', located in the old docks, while pondering the mystery of her wayward sister being still connected to the Joint Tactical Network. There, she also meets up with Zuikaku - who, as always, has been fishing.
Once this all is over, I-401 initiates a counter-attack against Kongou's subordinates. She uses a pair of manually-controlled decoys loaded with Corrosive Warhead Torpedoes to make an opening for herself by distracting the Kongou's forwards. One of those decoys manages to sink or seriously damage both Nachi and Haguro (who took Ashigara's place while she is restocking on torpedoes).
